SHL Dot in progress 02...

"Santa's Little Helper"
(in progress)

I think I mentioned we have company in town and so I haven't had as much time to spend painting. This is the progress I made yesterday and it's coming along nicely.

We had our second largest audience (97) at Thursday Art Night, last night and screened a great film, "From Cheyenne to Pendleton. The Rise and Fall of the Rodeo Cowgirl". Steve Wursta, the director, was on hand to present it in front of a nearly packed house. Thanks Steve for sharing your great film with us.

I should finish this tomorrow and possibly create another one too.

Here's a new one in the series of dogs available for adoption. His name is not really Santa's Little Helper, but it could be.

We have my cousin and his family in town, plus director Steve Wursta coming in for Thursday Art Night tomorrow, so I may not get any painting done. In 24 hours you'll know if I did anything in my studio.

Good to my word, I finished Buzz today.

Buzz is another dog that is available for adoption through Best Friends of Baker. I chose to paint Buzz, because Corrine had asked me to make my next painting of a dog with long hair. The picture I worked from was of Buzz before a summer hair-cut.

I also decided to make Buzz pink just for the fun of it. To stick to the true colors didn't seem as inviting as the pink and blue did. So there you have it.

When it comes to this point in a triathlon training program, I have very little time to add stuff to my day, and today was no exception. I ran a bunch of errands with Corrine and worked on a bike that was being adopted. To much time working on somebody else's bike, that's what stole most of my time.

I sat down to get my customary hour of painting in, and it just wasn't enough. Tomorrow has two works in it and a bunch of stuff to do around the house because of the three sets of company we'll be having over the next 6 days.

I promise to get this painting done. You'll see.

The bike ride was great, thanks for asking. Came home took a nice nap after a good lunch of almond red curry over rice and vegetables. Mmm.

Then I came to the studio for about an hour of work. I added some pinks and blues to Oscar, and touched up the dots to give them a little more pop.

If you'd like to adopt the subject of this painting he's available from Best Friends of Baker. Follow the link to read more about him and you can also see the image I used to create this painting.

Now, it's time to do some yard work in the 115 degree heat. Lucky me.

If I felt like staying up later and being tired for my 50 + mile training ride tomorrow, I would finish this new painting. However, I want to go to bed and finish it tomorrow.

I really like how Oscar looks, and can't wait to work on him again.

My friend Hunter and his family were just on a trip to Rhode Island, and while there, he took pictures of every dog he saw. This was one of them. Thanks Hunter for the source material.

Since I only have two dogs at home, I look for other subjects all the time. Sometimes a friends dog inspires me to create something, sometimes it's a dog on petfinder, or in this case pictures someone sends me.

The thing I like about this one is the little blonde eyelashes the dog has. It's something yellow labs have and other dogs develop as the get older. Visually I just love them.

Star Dots

"Star Dots"
3.5"x5" acrylic on wood
SOLD

Here's an expansion on the dot theme. I'm a big fan of mid-century modern design and we have a wooden clock that is similar in style to the star dots of this painting.

I had photographed this dog last summer, but never turned any of the pictures into paintings until today. She's a sweet girl, that didn't know quite what to make of me at first. By the end of the visit, it was as if we had always been close friends.

The farmers market was a big success for us today, although there were no free watermelons. I go away for two weeks and everything changes. The date for free watermelons is yet to come, because of the cooler weather we've had this year. So stay tuned and I'll let you know when it is.

We came home afterwards, had dinner with fresh arugula from the garden, and then I got to painting. I love the look on the little dog's face. Bettini rarely likes to pose for me, but this pic took her by surprise and so she looked happier than in most photos.

The colors of the dot might make some folks think of the Cubs, because I am from the Chi-town area, but they would be wrong. I've been a Mets fan since I was a kid, I hate the Cubs.

It was almost four days in a row, but I'm to tired from mountain biking today to finish this new painting of Bettini.

I spent much of the day running errands, some of which were caused by the water in the basement incident. Others because I'll be out at the farmers market tomorrow selling our mugs, and maybe even some of my new paintings.

Come see me. It's free watermelon day at the market. Mmmm.

Buddy Dot

"Buddy Dot"

3.5"x5" acrylic on wood
SOLD

I've been so good at painting lately, I guess I could go back to the "Dog Painting a Day" name for the blog. I won't get ahead of myself though.

This is my friends dog Buddy. He's a super sweet guy, and I hope that shows through in this picture. His owner loves his tail, so I chose a picture that showed a wisp of it.

This one took a little longer than the others I had done, because there was more texture on the board, making the brush behave differently. It turned out great even with that extra texture.

3 Ring Winslow

The Winslow circus theme continues, I'm sure it was my subconscious. I can be clever when I think about it, but this was a total accident.

Here's how it all got started. We were on this trip to visit the folks in AZ and were brainstorming on ways to make more art sales, and just get ourselves better exposure. Painting an hour everyday was on the list and I have been faithful to that the past two days. Yeah, right? Well, here's the rub.

We had hired someone to cut our grass and water our garden while we were away. The guy did a great job on the lawn and the garden looks great. However, someone (not him, because I asked) decided to water our bamboo, for hours, possibly 48 hours or more, and so there was quite a bit of water in our basement when we returned. Not so great.

So instead of unpacking our rig and settling back into the house I spent over 2 hours wet vacuuming the basement, and Corrine had the task of going through two portfolios that soaked up the water. Very little was ruined, but there were a few things that I liked that I'll be tossing.

So here's where the story turns for the better. One of the boxes that got wet, but wasn't ruined contained art supplies. Included in there was a compass, something I haven't seen in years, and haven't used in almost 20. Now, I love using it again, and can't wait to add perfect circles to my next painting.

So there you have it, thanks to someone watering our bamboo, I found a new tool of creativity. That said, it's time to spend more time cleaning up the basement. We don't want any mold down there.

I've always been a fan of pop art and it may not always show up in the work I do. Here however, it's hard to miss.

I'm so happy to have found a new medium of sorts, in wood as canvas, and love the speed at which I can create a painting. Now it just needs to dry a little more and I'll add a coat of acrylic varnish.

Back and ready to paint...

I'm back from a trip and a long painting absence. Thanks for waiting.

Today, I prepped some blocks of wood to be used as canvases. I had seen someone doing work like this in Portland back in May. I asked my friend Davey if he had any spare scrap wood I could have to make some new works. Here's what he gave me, and now I have to make good and turn it into art.

My new goal is to spend at least one hour everyday creating some kind of art, and if I keep to that you'll see it here.
